“Green Chri$tma$,” by Stan Freberg

If you and Charlie Brown are kindred spirits, you’ll enjoy this one. “Green Chri$tma$” is a comedy short by Stan Freberg that debuted in 1958. The main character is Mr. Scrooge, the head of an advertising agency who is devising ways to capitalize on the appeal of Christmas for his clients. The song was initially condemned by advertising agencies and sales departments. These days, it can be found on the CD, Dr. Demento Presents the Greatest Christmas Novelty CD of All Time. This is the first of a few songs from that album to appear on this list.

Why I Shared It

I’m a graphic designer who works in marketing and advertising at various day jobs since the mid-1990s. I’ve always been the self-deprecating type, and this skit sends up my industry rather well. It also echoes the same messages found in Charlie Brown’s famous Christmas special, but precedes the special by seven years.
