Christmas Songs You’ve Likely Never Heard, Day 23

“A Christmas Carol” by Tom Lehrer

It’s a slightly cynical view of Christmas, gift giving, and the commercialization of the holiday season. This song was released in 1959, but I originally heard this on Dr. Demento’s Christmas collection. Anything found on there can be slightly off kilter.

If you don’t know who Tom Lehrer is, but you know what Electric Company is from PBS in the 1970s and 1980s, he is the person who wrote many of their catchiest songs (Silent E, anyone?).

Why I Shared It

We like to talk about how bad things have become in this day and age. I find it interesting, though, the same messages we spread about how poorly we view the holiday are the same ones spread by others over 50 years ago. Have we improved, or have things stayed the same? Food for thought!
